This piece was commissioned by globally recognized marimba player Pedro Carneiro. I began composing in the fall of 2008 and finished in the winter. It was dedicated to him.
The title of the piece is MAYU. The word "mayu" means "cocoon" in Japanese. Butterfly and moth larvae become pupa inside cocoons and gradually metamorphose into adults, finally breaking out of their cocoons and taking to the air. I envision the human soul changing with the passing of time within the body or "cocoon", which experiences life. At death, the soul leaves its cocoon and takes on a new form as it sets off for the next world. That image is what inspired this song.
This song is comprised of three parts that are performed in succession. Part I starts off with continuous sounds like sleep, and then the motion of the violin gradually leads it into a choppy flow and greater energy. In Part II, the marimba performs a spiritual improvisation in the midst of the contemplative continuity and change of the special sound of the string quartet. Part III features a rhythmical development at a fast tempo. It requires a high degree of ensemble technique, and the relationship between the rhythms of each part includes hocket-like elements as well. Following a vivid climax including partial ad-libbing by the marimba, there is a short ritualistic coda.
I composed the piece with Pedro Carneiro and the Arditti Quartet in mid and envisioned their brilliant virtuosity coming together.
