Program note

Miniatures for Two Pianos are part of the series of a dozen miniatures for solo or small ensembles that Kui Dong began to write since the since the summer of 2002. The first four miniatures are scored for cello, piano and percussion, and they were written for the Core Ensemble's Silken Phoenix theatre project.

This group of 3 miniatures (v-vii) were written in December 2003 for Hirsch-Pinkas Piano Duo, and they are to be performed continuously. The composer's main focus on these miniatures includes phrasing, space, momentum and timbre control, so as to achieve a sense of continuity, even though there are 3 sections. Acoustically perhaps the music reflects certain Chinese instruments, yet there is a desire to achieve transparency and abstract image.
