Riddles is a Chinese folk song, and its lyrics are somewhat mysterious, set to a simple melody featuring two or three motives.
Such simple materials have provided much room for the composer to test her imagination, using the technique of variations and in the context of a rondo. The idea is to provide an opportunity for the audience to guess what is to follow, fulfilling what is implied in the title of the piece.
