L'extase d'Amour, H. Leslie Adams' substantial entry into the viola repertoire, takes the form of a fantasia on a theme. It begins in the viola, transitioning between instruments in large sections reminiscent of the late Romantic period. A pizzicato section introduces the final lush unfolding of the original material in its most active incarnation, which begins the reversal back through all the developed material. The viola ends with the theme as the piano harmonizes in graceful arpeggiation underneath.
