'I was honored to be invited to re-imagine one of Stephen Sondheim's works for Anthony de Mare. I chose "A Bowler Hat" because of its unusual theme both musically and in terms of narrative. It is from "Pacific Overtures," and features a repeated theme that is beautifully constructed, very catchy, and a little melancholy. The subject of the musical is the difficult Westernization of Japan, told from the point of view of the Japanese. I was intrigued by this unusual song, and as a former milliner, the reference to the bowler hat made it a perfect match for me.'
