Originally commissioned by Jessica Heller Knopf for the 2012 World Saxophone Congress in St. Andrews, Scotland, and adapted for viola and piano in 2024 for Profs. Patrick Yim and Kiu Tung Poon, THE SOULFUL AND THE PERPETUAL is in two movements. “The Soulful” is lyrical and expressive, with moving, gripping melodies. “The Perpetual” is a moto perpetuo, symbolizing consistency and perseverance. The virtuosic cadenza features ever-moving patterns of fast notes, reaching toward the exquisite with fluency and agility.
