Most of the pages in the diary are yellowed, stained with purple ink blots, and are fragile upon handling. These diaries have not yet been transcribed.

MacBride, Foreign Editor of the Daily Herald in London, discussing his upcoming trip to Shansi (Shaanxi) and Shensi province of China. Snow mentions a possibility of entering the Red districts within these regions and becomes the first foreign journalist to interview the leaders of the Red Army, including Mao Tse-tung (Mao Zedong).
